Sneak Peek
“My name is Kailan Harley. I am ten years old. I can see things most people can’t see… And that makes me special, not cursed.”
That’s always what Mom taught me to say anyway. But then she went to heaven with Dad, and I was sent to live with my Uncle Paul who didn’t have the same beliefs that she had. He thought I was insane and weird whenever I’d imagine things that hadn’t happened yet… Then he’d think I was cursed when they did happen.
The first time, I predicted that his clothes would catch on fire. When they did in the dryer, Uncle Paul beat me senseless. Mom always made me feel like I was gifted with my “visions” but not Uncle Paul. I tried to learn to shut up about it then to avoid further hits. But it was hard… God, it was hard.
Especially when one of the visions was of him shocking me until I was brain dead.
I told him about it - so worried that he would. I wanted him to assure me he wouldn’t, that I was his nephew and he’d promise me he’d protect me… But Uncle Paul was a real fucking bastard. He locked my bedroom door, pushed me down on my bed and said:
“Bet you didn’t see this coming, did you, you demented little freak?”
That was the first time someone really took advantage of me. He was right; I hadn’t seen that abuse coming. I just saw the electric bed… And after he got tired of pushing me down onto my bed over the years, he did eventually put me on that electric one. He signed the paperwork and let the brilliant doctors at Beacon Behavioral Hospital torture me to make the visions stop.
And after three years of being trapped in that place like a clipped wing bird, they did… The visions died as well as a part of my own soul.
